Domain Names

Don't get confused and think a domain name is technical - it is really just a sign post pointing people to your website - otherwise you would have to tell them to access 92.10.33.49 or some other string of code.

Clever domain names include a keyword, e.g. www.bournemouthmassage.co.uk

Or you can buy a domain name just to point to a specific page on your site, e.g. www.southbournefastandflat.info which is obviously much easier than telling them to go to http://www.fsk.org.uk/Events/ComingSoon/SouthbourneFastandFlat10K5KRun/tabid/328/Default.aspx

Domain names seems to be getting longer and more complicated but I advise my clients to use capital letters, colours, bold or italics to help customers read the domain name so it is easier to remember.

Quick and simple brochure website

This is a new site advertising DRIVE School of Motoring in Highcliffe, near Christchurch.
www.lessonswithdrive.co.uk/
The client chose a clever domain name lessonswithdrive.co.uk. Domain names are still one of the most important factors affecting how well your site performs in the search engines. This name contains two of the keywords DRIVE and LESSONS.
Although it is a simple brochure website, the client is able to manage all the content. For example if he wants to change the advertised prices. This was achieved by using SiteBuilder from the web hosting company.

Domain names

What's in a name?

Did you spend a long time on a name for your business? If so, you should consider the domain name for your business too?

I prefer domain names that do not include hyphens "-" or full stops "." these can be so easy to overlook when you are typing in your web browser.

Some domain names can seem too long-winded e.g. http://www.individualityswimmingandfitness.co.uk/ which is a client of mine. But stop and think for a minute. Individuality is the business name but it makes sense to include the swimming and fitness part to claify the purpose of the business.

Although people are likely to mis-spell this domain name if they have to type the full address, this website ranks well in the search engines so is often found that way. One of the reasons it ranks well in the search engines is because the key words are used in the domain name. Similarly with another client of mine http://www.wirralflooringandcarpets.co.uk/

My domain name on the other hand is short and easy to remember http://www.gtilley.co.uk/ but hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I was starting out again I would choose differently. In fact, try entering http://www.webdesignbygaynortilley.co.uk/ into your browser and you will see that it redirects you to my site. That's right - you can buy more than one domain name and have them all redirected to your website.

Some people advise using colours as part of your business name as they are easily remembered. I would say, try out a few names on your friends and family first to see if your business name really does conjure up the right picture in people's minds. I'm also happy to help, contact enquiries@gtilley.co.uk for more information.

Step by Step

If you are setting up a new business you may already know that you want a website, but you're not quite ready to launch into working with the web designer just yet. If you contact me, we take things at a pace that suits your business. You may want to set up an online business and so the sooner the better. Or maybe you just want to register your domain name and then work on other parts of your businesss before you focus on the website.

One client currently setting up a private jet hire business is taking things one step at a time.

He intially called me to ask for a quote so that he could plan the costs into his budget. Next, on his behalf, I registered the domain name he wanted on the same day that he registered with companies house. A week later we set up the email addresses for the business. Currently they are working on a printed brochure for their business and when that is finished they will be ready to look at establishing the website. Initially this client only wants a brochure website, but there is scope to develop this further once the business is well established.

So my advice is that you take things step by step, at a pace which suits your business, but I am happy to work with you from the start.

Call now for a free quote.
